COMMISSIONING OF THE NGONG ROAD 🛣️ FLY OVER.
President William Ruto officially commissioned the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover in Nairobi on 29 June 2026, marking the completion of one of the city's major road infrastructure projects aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion along the busy Ngong Road corridor. The Sh3.58 billion project, implemented by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), was completed ahead of its original schedule.
Key highlights of the commissioning
Official opening of the flyover The President unveiled the new overpass, formally opening it to motorists. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time at the busy Junction Mall intersection by separating through traffic from local traffic, improving the flow of vehicles between Ngong Road, Naivasha Road and King'ara Road.
Modern transport infrastructure The new infrastructure includes:
A 255-metre elevated flyover.
Upgraded junctions and access roads.
Dedicated pedestrian walkways.
Cycling lanes to encourage non-motorised transport.
Improved drainage systems to minimise flooding.
Landscaping and beautification works around the junction.
Relief for Nairobi motorists President Ruto said the project forms part of the government's broader plan to modernise Nairobi's transport network by eliminating traffic bottlenecks. Thousands of motorists using the Ngong Road corridor daily are expected to benefit from reduced congestion, shorter commuting times and improved road safety.
Economic significance The President emphasized that efficient transport infrastructure lowers the cost of doing business by improving the movement of people and goods. According to the government, improved connectivity is expected to boost productivity, enhance access to commercial centres and support Nairobi's continued economic growth.
Project financing and implementation The flyover was financed through a concessional loan of approximately Sh3.58 billion from Spain's Corporate International Fund (FIEM) and implemented by KURA. Construction began in September 2024 and was completed ahead of schedule.
President Ruto's message
During the commissioning, President Ruto reiterated that his administration remains committed to investing in road infrastructure as part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). He noted that improved roads enhance mobility, attract investment, reduce transport costs and improve the quality of life for Kenyans. He also indicated that similar infrastructure projects will continue across Nairobi and other parts of the country to support economic development and urban mobility.
Expected impact
The Ngong Road–Naivasha Road Flyover is expected to:
Reduce traffic congestion at one of Nairobi's busiest intersections.
Cut travel times for commuters.
Improve road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Reduce vehicle operating costs and fuel consumption.
Support business activity through more efficient transport.
Complement ongoing efforts to modernise Nairobi's urban transport network.
