President William Ruto at the Dangote East Africa Refinery Groundbreaking Ceremony in Lamu
President William Ruto presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of the proposed Dangote East Africa Refinery in Lamu, an event that brought together several African leaders and senior government representatives.
The ceremony was attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Benin President Romuald Wadagni, Togo President Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and representatives from other African governments also attended.
In his remarks, President Ruto has highlight the refinery as a major investment in Kenya's energy and industrialisation agenda, with Lamu's strategic position along the Indian Ocean giving the project potential regional significance.
The refinery is expected to strengthen Lamu's role as an energy and logistics hub, building on the infrastructure around the Lamu Port and the LAPSSET corridor. The development could support the movement, storage and processing of petroleum products while creating opportunities for employment, local businesses and related industries.
President Ruto has also emphasised the importance of African-led investment and regional economic integration, particularly as East African countries seek to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and expand their industrial capacity.
The presence of President Museveni, Prime Minister Abiy and leaders from West Africa also gives the ceremony a broader continental dimension. It demonstrates the potential for cooperation between East and West African economies in energy, infrastructure, trade and investment.
For Lamu County, the project represents another major development expected to stimulate investment around the port, improve economic opportunities and position the coastal region as an important gateway for regional commerce.
The groundbreaking therefore marks more than the start of a refinery project; it is being presented as part of Kenya's wider effort to transform Lamu into a strategic energy, manufacturing and trade centre, while strengthening Kenya's economic links with other African countries.
