PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO VISIT TO USA
By Kelvin Malick
President William Ruto, accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto, has arrived in New York City, United States, ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which brings together world leaders for high-level discussions on global challenges and international cooperation.
The Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” Kenya’s participation is expected to focus on issues including debt sustainability, climate finance, digital trade, regional security and reforms to global governance institutions.
For President Ruto, the New York visit also carries a strong economic and investment agenda. He is expected to promote Kenya as an investment destination and seek partnerships in energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, health, agriculture and technology, with the stated objective of expanding markets, supporting businesses and creating employment opportunities.
A major area of focus will be Africa's participation in the digital and artificial-intelligence economy. Ruto is expected to co-lead the AI Middle Powers Initiative with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, while also participating in discussions aimed at mobilising investment and building Africa's capacity in AI, data and computing infrastructure.
The President is also scheduled for investment engagements involving the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and the Global Africa Business Initiative, including discussions around major energy and infrastructure opportunities such as the proposed East Africa Refinery in Lamu.
Beyond economic diplomacy, Ruto is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Heads of State and Government, multilateral institutions and global corporations, seeking to strengthen Kenya's diplomatic, trade and development partnerships. He will also engage Kenyans living in the United States on matters concerning the diaspora and opportunities for investment and skills transfer.
The UNGA provides Kenya with a platform to articulate its priorities on Africa's access to development finance, climate action, technology, peace and security, and a greater African voice in global decision-making. The high-level General Debate begins as leaders gather in New York to address major international challenges, including conflicts, climate change, artificial intelligence and sustainable development.
